Strengthening Canadian Democracy Platform 2025

This election, the Samara Centre is asking candidates to commit to immediate and concrete change. Here are six practical and simple ideas for a stronger democracy you can discuss with the candidates who come to your door. These ideas should have cross-party support. They require minimal public spending. All that’s needed is political will.

Candidates should commit to push their parties to:

1- Free committees to do non-partisan work

2- Empower MPs to scrutinize government

3- Establish a national citizens’ assembly on democratic and electoral reform

4- Open up nomination races

5- Improve transparency and accountability from digital platforms

6- Invest in lifelong civic learning
