Ten years ago, Alison Loat and Michael MacMillan published Tragedy in the Commons. This bestselling book drew on 80 interviews with former Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum. Loat and MacMillan traveled across Canada to speak with MPs in their homes and local cafes to learn about the state of democracy in Canada. Released in 2014, the book gave a revealing and insightful glimpse into the practice of politics in Canada. The book became a bestseller and inspired subsequent outputs from the Samara Centre’s MP Exit Interview Project, including our podcasts Humans of the House and Les Personnages de la Chambre.
To mark the 10th anniversary of Tragedy in the Commons, Loat and MacMillan reunite for a special bonus episode of Humans of the House hosted by Samara Centre CEO Sabreena Delhon. Together they explore how the book endures and continues to influence discussions about the state of Canada's democracy. The episode along with the broader impact of the Samara Centre’s MP Exit Interview project has also been featured in The Hill Times.
